My ratings for The Tea Dragon Society
Overall Rating: Hands down the cutest graphic novel I’ve ever read

Spice Level: It’s a children’s book, so absolutely zero spice

Re-readability rating: I could read these books over and over

It’s one of those books that’s just too cute to ignore. The Tea Dragon Society feels like a warm hug in book form. The story is sweet and thoughtful, and while it looks like a kids’ book, trust me, it’s the perfect cozy read for anyone who needs a little calm in their life. Plus, the artwork is so gorgeous, I swear the books could double as decor—mine live on my office shelf, and they look amazing. It’s wholesome, charming, and honestly, we all deserve something this lovely in our lives.
Summary of The Tea Dragon Society
Greta, a young blacksmith apprentice, stumbles across a tiny lost dragon and saves it from a pair of hungry dogs. When she reunites it with its owner, she’s introduced to the world of tea dragons—adorable, magical little creatures. Tea dragons grow tea leaves on their horns (yes, it’s as cute as it sounds), and as Greta discovers, tea brewed from those leaves hold the memories of those who care for them, preserving beautiful stories and connections to the past. With the guidance of Hesekiel and Erik, the kind-hearted owners of a cozy little tea shop, Greta begins to learn the nearly forgotten art of tea dragon caretaking.
Along the way, Greta befriends Minette, a quiet, mysterious girl with no memories of her own. Their friendship blossoms as they care for the dragons, help Minette heal, and explore what it means to treasure memories, old and new.
The story doesn’t stop there. Across the full Tea Dragon series—The Tea Dragon Society, The Tea Dragon Festival, and The Tea Dragon Tapestry—we explore even more of this magical, comforting world. Each book introduces new characters, traditions, and challenges while continuing to celebrate themes of friendship, legacy, and healing. We learn about the tea dragons’ origins, meet people who find joy in their traditions, and watch Greta grow as both a blacksmith and caretaker. Minette’s journey also unfolds beautifully, as she rediscovers herself and finds peace with her past.
While it might look like a children’s book at first glance, it’s the kind of cozy, charming read that feels like a warm blanket on a cold day, no matter your age. Plus, the themes—friendship, legacy, and taking the time to care for what matters—are timeless. It’s sweet, thoughtful, and completely magical. If you’re in the mood for something wholesome and feel-good, this book is it.

Opinion: My take on The Tea Dragon Society
I first came across this book on Pinterest through the adorable dragon illustrations. When I spotted it at my local bookstore, I grabbed it without a second thought—and I’m so glad I did. From the very first page, I was hooked. The artwork by K. O’Neill is absolutely beautiful—soft colors, charming characters, and dreamy landscapes.
Even though The Tea Dragon Society is technically a children’s book, I think it’s one of those rare stories that anyone can enjoy.

It doesn’t need on high stakes, dramatic twists, or epic battles to pull you in. Instead, the heartwarming interactions, and themes of kindness, empathy, and tradition make you melt. Plus, the tea dragons? They’re hands down the cutest creatures ever.
What I loved most is how relaxing this book feels. Even after finishing it, I kept flipping back through the pages just to admire the illustrations and enjoy the story again. It’s the kind of book you want to take your time with.
Honestly, this book is one of my prized possessions. It lives on the bookshelf in my office, where I can see the beautiful cover every I work from home. If you haven’t picked it up yet, you’re seriously missing out.
“There’s a certain magic in caring for something so small and delicate. It’s like carrying a piece of a memory with you.”
This quote really gets to the heart of the story. It reminds us that magic doesn’t always have to be about big, flashy moments. Sometimes, it’s in the quiet, everyday things—like taking care of someone, showing kindness, or putting thought into what you do for others. Those little acts of care might seem simple, but they can leave a deep and lasting impact, not just on the person you’re helping, but on you too. It’s a reminder that even the smallest gestures can be magical in their own way.
For me, The Tea Dragon Society felt like a much-needed break from all the busyness of life. Sitting down with a cup of tea and reading this sweet book was so refreshing.
Writing style and Pace
K. O’Neill’s storytelling feels as calm and cozy as the world they’ve created. The pace is slow in the best way, giving you time to really enjoy every moment and interaction. It never feels too slow, though—it’s just right for a story like this. Instead of rushing through, it encourages you to take your time, enjoy the beautiful illustrations, and soak in the meaningful moments.

Characters
The characters in this story are so diverse and lovable, each with their own unique personality.
Greta, the main character, is curious, kind, and full of heart. Her natural curiosity leads her to Hesekiel and Erik’s tea shop, where she learns about the tea dragons—and herself. Greta’s open and caring nature makes her the perfect guide into the tradition of dragon caring.
Then there’s Minette, who’s quiet and reserved, with a mysterious past. She’s the perfect balance to Greta’s more outgoing personality. Minette’s journey of self-discovery is one of the sweetest parts of the story, as she finds healing, friendship throughout the book.
“Memories don’t just live inside you, Minette. They live in all the people and objects you share your life with.”
Hesekiel and Erik, the caretakers of the tea dragons, are full of wisdom and warmth. Their relationship is lovely, with mutual respect and kindness. They guide Greta and Minette with patience and understanding.

Other books in the series
The Tea Dragon Society is the first book in this adorable series, followed by The Tea Dragon Tapestry and The Tea Dragon Festival. Each book adds a little more magic, introducing new characters, new tea dragons, and new adventures.
If you fell in love with the first book (like I did), you’ll definitely want to keep going. The whole series is beautifully crafted, with illustrations that are just as heartwarming in the next two books as the first.

“Just because something comes easily to you, does not mean it has no value. You find it effortless because you love it, and that is why it is your gift.”

Merch and games
There’s also an adorable card game inspired by The Tea Dragon Society. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m seriously tempted. It sounds like the perfect cozy game to play with friends on a rainy afternoon.
How does it work? In The Tea Dragon Society Card Game, you are set to experience the art of tea dragon caretaking yourself. Each player has their own deck representing their tea dragon. You play through the four seasons – from spring to winter – and you draw cards to strengthen your bond with your dragon, collect memories and score points. By the end of the year, the player with the most points wins.
There was also an absolutely adorable Mountain Chamomile plushie available through a Kickstarter campaign back in 2021. It looks so cute and like it had stepped right out of The Tea Dragon Society! I was devastated to miss out on getting one. I hope something like it becomes available again someday!

Fun Fact
I had the chance to meet K. O’Neill at a signing session at the bookstore Momie Lyon, in France. They were so friendly and sweet!
When I mentioned that I was picking up books for myself and a friend, they gave me two prints of their dragon, one for each of us. They even drew a little dragon in my friend’s copy of The Tea Dragon Society and added a character sketch in my copy of The Moth Keeper. I was so glad I was able to meet them, it made these books more special, and I’ll cherish those drawings for a long time!
